Yes the diary was an extraordinary find for me, so I felt compelled to bring it to life! Even the US CIG (basically CIA’s predecessor) were greatly impressed by her account. So much so they preserved it and sent copies to relevant embassies.
What an incredible post. The dying days of empire—French, British, and soon American—in SEA fascinate me, I guess because a very young me was there at the end of it in Singapore.
Wow! Your research is amazing. Gotta love the European comment at the beginning, complaining about the native people:
‘How much longer must we put up with these blasted Annamites?’
